Skyline Redevelopment
About this Project
Topcoat was engaged by Naylor Love to deliver specialist fireproofing for the upgrade of the gondola and facilities at Skyline Queenstown.
The overall project involved significant enabling works at the top terminal, including piled retaining walls, rerouting services and luge tracks, and reconfiguring the pedestrian access. Access to the steep hillside site was via a narrow, one-way forestry road. The base terminal was adjacent to and partially over the existing terminal and on the same constricted site as the car park, adding further complexity. It stands as one of the most logistically challenging projects Naylor Love have undertaken, requiring meticulous planning, clear communication and careful coordination.
The Skyline redevelopment required fireproofing of structural steel before winter, while also ensuring the steel was protected with durable topcoats. Tight timelines and compliance with strict fire safety schedules made this a critical component of the project.
Our team applied a complete protective coating system featuring:
- Akzo Nobel Interchar 3120 on fire-rated steel for advanced fire resistance
- Interchar 870 and Interzinc 52E primers and topcoats for added protection and long-term durability
This combination ensures the structural steel is both code-compliant for fire safety and built to last in Queenstown’s alpine conditions.
