Auckland Corrections Facility
About this Project
The Auckland Corrections Facility needed four new outdoor Exercise Yards finished with a surface that was safe for sport and recreation, hard-wearing and able to carry a detailed and bespoke design created for the site. Topcoat was engaged by Hawkins, the main contractor, to install the Mapefloor Comfort System AL/X.
The system started with a 6mm rubber layer bonded to the concrete, followed by a primer and membrane, then epoxy topcoats in the design colours. It gives a slight cushioning effect underfoot. It is UV stable, so it doesn’t fade or stain outdoors, and it has a light non-slip texture across the surface. Our team reproduced the design using custom stencils. In the toilets in each yard we installed a non-pick sealant. Anti-tamper sealant was applied around the perimeter and around all fixed furniture.
The work was carried out in a live prison, with every day on site run to the facility’s security requirements. Most of it was outdoors, so the team planned around weather and surface conditions and coordinated closely with other trades. The project ran over 8-9 months, working to the construction programme as new slabs were poured.
The Result
The four Exercise Yards were completed to a high standard, and the client is very pleased with the finish and the detail in the stencilled design. The epoxy-coated surface is hard-wearing and built for heavy daily use, and the system carries a full 10-year warranty.Mapefloor Comfort has a long track record in Europe. This is the second corrections project where Topcoat has installed it, following a gymnasium at another corrections facility.
